— Walt Disney

A crucial aspect to consider when launching an online business is the platform you will utilize to market your products or services.

Each platform comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, so it’s crucial to conduct thorough research and identify the one that aligns best with your requirements.

As you embark on your online selling journey, remember that success is not a destination, but a journey..

Many individuals dream of starting their own online business, but they are unsure where to start. With a plethora of options available, it can be daunting to decide which platform to use. In this article, we will explore some of the most popular options for online selling, including Amazon, eBay, Etsy, OfferUp, eCommerce or Shopify stores, and selling information or courses on your own or via Udemy or Gumroad. By the end, you’ll have a clearer understanding of where to begin your online selling journey.

Make sure to read till the end to discover the single most crucial factor that can boost your success in online selling. Keep reading till you find it!

1. Selling on Amazon and Amazon FBA

Amazon is one of the world’s largest online marketplaces. With Amazon, you can either sell as a third-party seller or use the Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) service, where Amazon stores, packs, and ships your products for you.

What’s the difference between Amazon and Amazon FBA?

Amazon provides you with a few options when you’re selling on their platform:

  1. You can sell products, receive the orders, and ship the products from your location (often a home, garage, or warehouse)
  2. You can ship your products to Amazon, they store them, and they ship them for you when you make a sale. This is known as Amazon FBA (Fulfilled By Amazon). Of course, you pay fees for the warehousing, handling, and shipping.
  3. Dropshipping via Amazon. In this case, you receive the order from Amazon and send it to your dropshipper – or in some cases, the order goes directly to the dropshipper from Amazon. The dropshipper has the products and ships them for you.

I’ve heard dropshipping is way easier. What is dropshipping and why do people like it?

Dropshipping is a method of running an online store where you don’t actually keep any inventory yourself. Instead, when a customer purchases something from your store, you pass the order on to a third-party supplier who then ships the product directly to the customer.

The biggest advantage of dropshipping is that you don’t have to invest a large sum of money upfront to buy inventory. That means you can start a business with minimal capital, and you don’t have to worry about things like storing and shipping products.

People also prefer dropshipping because it allows them to offer a wider range of products than they could if they were keeping inventory themselves. With dropshipping, you can add products to your store without actually having to buy them first. That makes it easy to test out new products and see what your customers are interested in.

Of course, dropshipping isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Because you’re not in control of the shipping process, there can be delays and other issues that are outside of your control. And because you’re relying on a third-party supplier to fulfill your orders, you don’t have as much control over the quality of the products you’re selling.

Overall, though, dropshipping can be a great way to start an online business if you’re willing to put in the work to find a good supplier and build a great store.

Can I do dropshipping on Amazon?

Yes, see above section here.

Here are some pros and cons of using Amazon:

2. Selling on eBay

eBay is another popular online marketplace, with millions of users buying and selling on the platform. Here are some pros and cons of using eBay:

Pros:

  • Large customer base with a wide range of product categories
  • Ability to set your own prices and control your listings
  • Good for selling used or unique items

Cons:

  • High competition can lead to lower profit margins
  • Listing fees and final value fees can add up
  • Shipping and customer service are your responsibility

Here are some tips for successful selling on eBay:

  • Price your products competitively, but don’t underprice them
  • Use keywords in your product titles and descriptions to improve searchability
